Flickr unfinished:Tatter's list of things missing.

Three days ago Flickr rolled out the new design for all the English based members. It is nothing like finished. Important features are still missing. Here is a list by Tatters:), which lists them all. Just incredible! One can still use the old site by changing to another language, but how long? Most of these are bad, but I miss most of all the autofill that helps in writing tags, especially long ones.

1. Maps on photo page - missing (said they work hard to fix it, but Beta should not be compulsory then)
2. Navigation bar (pages) for groups, search result and other - gone last year - we have just endless loading, and it takes you back after you open a photo.
3. Admin invites - you know what I mean.
4. Notes - they should be on the photo, and not hidden. Not sure we can add a new note...
5. Date photo taken - we cannot see more photos taken that day - no link anymore from photo page.
6. Date photo loaded - gone
7. Link to guest pass from photo page - gone.
8. TAGs - Autofill - gone, - Impossible to add string of tags; for example try tags flower "I love flickr" blue red . What have you got?
9. Click on TAG shows up all flickr photos with that tag - should bring your photos first, as it was before..
10. Share by flickr mail works for one person only now (no multiple recipient address available anymore)
11. Formatting help - gone! (and my favourite Greasemonkey script does not work of course)
12. Link to your flickr account is called "settings" - confusing.
13. White text on black is very hard to eyes (means I am not going to comment on photos anymore).
14. Photos in comment(s) are important - they are too small now and hidden. We asked before - leave the first comment on the top.
15. Entire comments/info area is overloaded and messy

20. Fave date - gone. It is impossible to see when someone faved a photo.
21 Tool navigation bar above the photo - gone.
22. Shift-Enter to add new line in comment? it is something 30 years back, like using Unix.
23. COLLECTIONS are buried forever.

1. "Work had to fix the map." I do not know where they have said that. There was a thread in user voice asking for a link to the map. The product support answered in an email, which I among others got: "This is not going to be more prominent" 

4. Notes. You can see a list of notes when you click on Tags, but as you cannot see where they are on the photo, they are not of much use. I have notes showing the names of stars, useless as the notes are not visible on the photo.
8. As i said at the top, I really miss this feature.

28. Yes, as there is now bottom of the photo page or anything where they could publish anything. So where are the five columns of information sites that used to be there Well, I realize that you can reach them from the HF page.

5 Dec 2014 Some of these have come back as the system was again changed, the biggest perhaps is that it is black text on white again. any of these I have not checked as I have not used them.

The photo is from Iltasanomat. So badly as it goes for Finland now in skiing, including the skijumping, we could rejoice on Sunday when
Kaisa Mäkäräinen got the the overall World Cup victory in skishooting. Norwegian Tora Berger was only four points after her. We were also lucky that the weather was fine, though is was raining the day before. Of course Holmenkollen is so high that rain comes down as snow.

Artist. Kristine Roald Sandøy. Sandøy is the first artist in the project «Rom for kunst» (Room for art) 2014 at Oslo Central Station. And the first artist since  2001 who uses 3D.

I had passed this piece of art many times before I decided to take a photo. My Flickr friend Trond had already taken a photo. Yesterday I decided to take yet another photo. There were many people around and two beggars were sitting under it. I hurried a bit so the photo was not sharp and it had a blue cast so I had to make at black and white.

Up to 150,000 people pass the station every day, the biggest audience Kristine has had. The wall is 25 meters long and eight meters high.
- On this site there are many who try to find a balance in their lives, people who are exhausted. People who are tired. On their way to work or on their way home from work. But it was people I had in mind when I got the assignment, specifies Sandøy. "Balanceklang" is made of aluminum and translucent fabric and is lit from within at evening and night.

This is probably the last time I can use the direct connection from Flickr.

The early spring has caused many crocuses and other spring flowers to grow in the Botanical Gardens. Some of the last summers flowers or their remnants were there too. This here looks like a butterfly.

March 15. This is the colt's foot. The name is based on the shape of the leaves that appear after the flowers have died. It is the first wild flower of spring and I have never found it this early.
In Finnish it is 'leskenlehti', meaning the "widow's leaf".
I was walking past the side of the opera and further along the footpath continuing towards the east until I came to a point where I was facing about the middle of the row of Barcode buildings. After taking some photos, I turned and on shallow soil, with a concrete block behind them, I saw a long line of the flowers, that must have been growing already for a while. I had visited a couple of other sites where I had seen these flowers last spring, but had not seen any. Two days ago I went to the Botanical Gardens and found there snow bells, winter aconites, seven types of crocuses and a few other flowers. There are snow bells and crocuses also in the city.

Most of Flickr's content is now being shared on and we are working with all these partners to make the experience even better. This week, we already introduced new attribution and a new look for Flickr photos on Tumblr on mobile, and there is more sharing goodness to come. "

This is the latest bombshell from Flickr. So it is all because of percentages and so it is right to deprive lots of people something they treasure and have been happy to use. Some even came to Flickr because they liked the feature.
I have tried to accommodate all the new changes and tried to be happy with them. This however is something that has made me deeply depressed. I read about this over 14 hours ago and I still start to cry when I think of this. I guess I am a lazy blogger (not that it is Flickr's fault) and this feature has made me contribute more often.
So one can never be sure what will suddenly stop; something is made available, people get used to it , enjoy it and whoops! the rug is pulled from under your feet!
Flickr is very kind: when I started to write this, red letters appeared on top telling me that they would deprecate the support for sharing to Blogger on 3/25.
Well, I am going to write more during this remaining week (+ a few days) than before. This is of course OK for Flickr as Wordpress, Blogger and LiveJournal are not so much about photos as Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. Barcode project almost finished

It is good that we can now walk on Dronning Eufemias gate, though the street is not available for walking. Still, much of the asphalt and tram rails are there. There are lots of different shape benches, decorations and flowers between the buildings. Many of the roof tops have gardens, though one cannot see that from the ground. There should still be a couple of buildings built. According to drawings, there will be more construction on the other side of the street though it is very difficult to get more information about that. Nearer to the central city, the base for the new main library has been built, and new Munch museum will be on the other side.

Will all winters now on be the same? We had some snow about a month ago, now it has just been raining and raining, one lovely sunny day couple of weeks ago, then only grey skies.
It makes me so depressed.
I saw this flower last Sunday and was amazed! I took a photo of some snow bells more than a week ago, but they were more believable.
This weekend will be the Holmenkollen ski festival. I hope it will not be raining all the time, though up there it might come down as snow.

The Finnish team gathered itself and won the bronze game against USA 5 - 1. The usual goal keeper, who had been absent in the Silver match, did not let any US pucks through. I had been so unsure about the outcome that I did not watch the game so I missed the excitement. It was wonderful mostly for the reason that Teemu Selänne, 43, made two goals out of five, one of which was the winning goal. These were his fifth olympic games and also the last.In addition, he was named the whole
Tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP).

These two cartoons are so ingenious and brilliant that I have to laugh every tIme I look at them.

They were designed by artists in Swedish Aftonbladet in 2011. That year the ice hockey finals for the World Championships were in Bratislava. The match was between Sweden and Finland. Finland had some promising, quite young players in the team, so they called the players baby lions. This gave the idea to make a baby version of the lion in the Finnish logo and plant a pacifier in its mouth. "It will be child's play," was the headline.
The paper had also the sentence: "Fear Finland, now big brother will snatch the gold!"

This probably enraged the Finns to such a measure that they beat Sweden 6 - 1. Next day Aftonbladet released that same baby lion, but this time triumphant and angry, gnawing at the three crowns of Sweden's logo.. The headline read now: "Damn, it was child's play."

This is not quite the right photo as it has not really any white colour.
BBC has a competition where the winner has to get the lowest possible score. One hundred people are asked a question Then the competitors have to give an answer. If they give the wrong one, they get 100 points. If only 4 people have given the same answer, they get 4 points.
Once they had to give a name of a counry whose flag had the colours red, blue and white, though they knew Slovakia. No-one said Norway! I do not know if any of the hundred people had known it, when the lowest points were listed, at least they were not among the zeros.

Darren LoPrinzi from flickr says:As someone in the visual communication industry, I think it has a blocky and childish style, but moreover the chunky fonts and lack of formatting does nothing to help compartmentalize all the various informational bits jammed in that sidebar...so it resembles a page of text with no paragraph breaks. ...that is a big reason why it looks so jumbled and hard on the eyes.

What is really baffling is that I am hearing claims of how it's improved over the last few months. For the most part, the "improvements" are actually just the restoration of old, necessary functions that were taken away when the beta page first came out. I can't in good conscience call those "improvements."

That all said, I know this page is coming out whether I like it or not....so I tried on numerous occasions to stay opted in in order to get used to it...you know, rip the bandaid right off. But I couldn't stay. It's downright painful to read or write comments...and of course there is NO HTML, so we cannot use ANY code that the NPE offers ANYWHERE on Flickr......and staff refuses to answer how they are handling photos in discussion threads going forward. "

This is so much the way I think also. I really dread the day when it will be the norm. I sometimes go to the new page to check but come always back to the present one, Fortunately, after Darren wrote this, the photos in comments are back which is a great relief but what will happen to the map?
Hopefully there are still many things they have to do. so the day when I open my page and have no alternative, will still will be far away.

Water and ice

Yes the Swedes won, but they have a couple of world standard players like Erik Karlsson, I do not know where Teemu Selänne was as I was not watching. Actually, no-one expected that the team would go so far that they would get to the semi-finals and would beat Russia. They can still compete for the bronze medal but for many watchers this is the end of the games.
The Swedes could have made more goals in the third part but they did not, and that was partly for the effort the Finns made.

Winter olympics

I have no photos of ice hockey, but the semifinals between Sweden and Finland are just on, last result Sweden 2, Finland 1. People writing letters in Finnish newspaper Iltasanomat were mostly so sure Finland will win, that I really worry! Nowadays I never can watch the games, only wait for the end results, to either be joyful or sad. I just cannot feel we'll win.

In Finland there is always in January a Helsinki Lux, where there are light installations all over the city. I visited most of them. This time there was a special exhibition at the Cabelfactory exhibition halls. This is one of them.

Black Day

Well; I am so slow that this is under the bridge. Somebody go an idea to protest against the new photo experience by devising a photo saying "flickr Black Day". It was to be published on the 8th of December: That did not mean that the new page would come into existence on that day. Many others also devised a page. Some where really clever. So I did one in the end too. Of course there is a spelling mistake in it!

Not that flickr ever go back from what they have decided on; maybe it would be "egg in their face".
I can accept most of it; but I like to add photos to comments so I can express some extra feature of the photo I am showing.

The time when the 'new photo experience' will come mandatory is quickly approaching. Again I will quote another Flickr user who says it so well:

I have been hoping that we could escape that but that does not seem to be. I was unhappy about the change in May, but manage to cope with it; as my equipment was not old. I tried Ipernity then, but did not take to it.

Now I do not know if it is possible to cope. At least I have to change my Flickr usage. If descriptions, comments, even tags are awkward to use and photos in comments not possible at all, things will be very boring. They will deprive us so many things we are ussed to that Flickr will not be Flickr any more.

•Strange things happen on Flickr. A person accuses another one for taking her photo, even when the two photos are completely different.
•The accused of course is angry and says that everyone can see that these are two different photos.
”And if I ever wanted to be a thief, I certainly would not steal so conventional and "run-of-the-mill" photo as the "Breathless" is.*LOL”
•I do not know what to say to that as her photo has 65 views and the other has 785 views and is in 2 galleries. Still, it has been on Flickr for some four years longer. Personally I like the one with lesser views better.

Queen Sonja International Music Competition

The photo is not from there, but someone is singing! Tomeline Mikkeline Eide, who was only 14 at the time, sang at a Balcony concert in the Oslo Opera. Beautiful voice.

The preliminary rounds were on Thursday and Friday. There were 40 singers and no-one envies the judges for their task, so even is the competition. Great voices and interpretations. The ladies are especially difficult to put in any kind of order of preference.
On the first day I liked Erik Anstine from USA singing 'The List' from Don Giovanni, for a lively interpretation using his hands in an imaginative way. The problem was that 'Der Dobbelgänger' sounded to me out of tune in places.
Julia Maria Dan, a soprano from Romania sang well, as did Kristina Mkhitaryan from Russia. The only Finn was Miina-Liisa Värelä, beautiful voice but other sopranos
had more exiting choices. An interesting thing that a Finnish soprano some years ago also sang from 'Fidelio'.

The singers had been fairly even but then appeared this tall Turkish guy singing an aria from 'Un Ballo in Maschera' with lots of feeling (with a great voice to match). His Schubert was "Der Wanderer'. I've never seen or heard such a Schubert interpretation in these competitions, one did hang on every word. The last sentence (translated): Where you are NOT, there is happiness!' was especially effective. Then I knew at least one who would go to the semifinals, maybe to the finals!

On Friday, 2nd day of preliminaries. Notwithstanding a few, the standard was equally high. One could hear a few 'bravos'. Mélissa Petit from France was fairly tiny but sang an aria from 'Ciulio Cesare' with feeling. Hanna Kim from South Korea and Hamida Kristoffersen from Norway received 'bravos', both had beautiful soft voices. Hanna had a tiny frame but 'Teure Hallen' from 'Tannhäuser' sounded huge.
Oleg Tibulgo, Moldovia, was an amazing 'Mefistofele' by Bolto. I really felt alarmed in one stage.

Bottomless pit

I know it is not, you can see the bottom.but it is very deep.
As deep as the sadness and despair, yes, it is almost despair now when the Yahoo! toolbar/advertisement is coming. I do not have it yet.
People never stop talking about the Flickr changes, and no wonder. One complaint is that there was no pre warning about the change. Well, there was not by Flickr but on help forum there were hints of them by people in the bucket test, though they could not say much.
Two months ago, in a thread about the Y. toolbar, someone said:
"I want the old version back! This new look sucks and it's a disaster! "

She was answered: " Could it be possible you're part of one of the *other* bucket tests? If you see a link here in the Forum about some sort of feedback group, you should post there, as apparently there are a few different "new looks" Flickr's playing around with testing out."

Oldt1mer also said: "You think you've got it bad with an obscene nav bar...wait 'till you see the bucket test I am now subjected to.

Flickr has gone totally insane!!!!!!!!!!

For the last 24 hours I have only been able to see the first 4 comments on any of my photos and you should see the rest of it!!!!!!!!! It really is dreadful and so badly thought out that people will leave in droves when their subs are due for renewal."

So if you could read between the lines, there was a warning that something bad was coming. And Oldt1mers predilection was right, it is just to be seen if the toolbar will cause as many pages of complaints or more than the change. After 9 hours there are already 6 pages.
